Just heard the Buffallo Gals feature on woman’s hour this morning. Another great job by the BBC’s Lindsay Leonard and Felicity Finch. The feature was recorded at the Didmarton Bluegrass Festival last month.
So drawing conclusions from both the “Sore Fingers” Broadcast last June and this latest, we can deduce that both Jock Tyldesley and Kate Lissauer were both depressed in their youth and found Old Time music as their salvation!
Funny really, I found mine in Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin. Perhaps that says a lot.
Jokes apart, I really got into the west coast sound in the late 60s and it’s those harmonies and the crisply played acoustic guitars strummed by the Eagles and Crosby, Stills Nash and Young that lead me onto the traditional American folk music trail. I’ve read a lot of music biographies and a lot of those artists brushed with traditional music before they became famous and created their own sounds.
And where I agree wholeheartedly with Kate and jock is that if it makes you feel that good listening to it, playing it is even better.
We have to hope that the cuts announced yesterday will not prevent creative broadcasts like those initiated by Lindsay being made in the future. Its been a good year for Bluegrass and Old Time on Radio 4, The Carrivicks, Sore Fingers and now the Buffallo Gals. Who’s next?
